Stakeholder engagement

The scheme will have wider impacts on communities, businesses, and other stakeholders. It is important for us to fully understand these impacts and at various stages we will be seeking your views about how your coastline is managed.

We are keen to engage with the diverse communities across the area who are directly or indirectly impacted by what we do now and in the future. We will plan a variety of interventions to achieve this.

We want to:

  • Understand how we can best engage with you

  • Share the dilemma this coastline is facing over the next 100 years

  • Inform you of how risk will be managed in the short- and medium-term

  • Gather your input for the long-term plan

Our engagement activities will vary depending on the stage of the scheme. How we engage with you will fall into the following categories:

(Hover your mouse over each bubble to find out more. An accessible version of this diagram can be found here)

Inform: We will provide you with balanced information to help you to understand the issues and potential options.

Consult: We will ask you for input, about scheme delivery, at various stages. Your responses will be given due consideration.

Involve: We will work directly with groups (e.g. Coastal Community Groups) to make sure that public concerns and aspirations are understood and considered in decision making.

Collaborate: Where appropriate we will work with other organisations to deliver elements of the scheme in partnership.

What we are doing already

Coastal community groups

Coastal Community Groups have been created for Eastbourne, Sovereign Harbour and Pevensey Bay. These groups include stakeholders that represent a broad range of local perspectives (e.g. commerce, leisure, tourism). At the meetings members discuss with the team elements of the scheme that impact their local areas. Agendas and minutes are available in our document library.

If you want to get involved in one of the Community Groups please email us (PevenseyandEastbourneCoast@environment-agency.gov.uk) with details of which group you are interested in.

Schools

Young people are the future custodians of the coastline. We are engaging secondary school students in the area via the Coastal Schools Partnership https://coastalschoolspartnership.org/. We aim to inform them of the of our work on the scheme and to listen to their views as with other stakeholders.
